Misconceptions Around Burnout
"Only people who work too much can burn out."
Misconception no. 1
This stereotype persists in many places, but it's not entirely accurate. It's not the amount of work alone that determines the risk of burnout, but rather a variety of factors that can lead to burnout when combined unfavorably. Several individuals can perceive the exact same workload as differently burdensome or even invigorating.
An unfavorable combination of factors from the work environment, personal life, as well as internal personality traits and patterns can predispose one to burnout.
"Only sensitive people can burn out."
Misconception no. 2
Unfortunately, this stereotype is still widely held. However, the statement is simply not true. Anyone can be affected by burnout. Both external factors (the work environment, personal life) and internal factors (personality traits, individual behavior, and mental patterns) can influence the development of burnout susceptibility. Sensitivity is often a strength in many situations: A keen perception can help prevent burnout.
Frequently, it's particularly dedicated individuals who eventually suffer from burnout.
"Affected burn-out patients can be recognized by exhaustion."
Misconception no. 3
This statement is partially true. Persistent fatigue and exhaustion can indicate an advanced stage of burnout. If nothing is done to address the development of burnout, it can progress into depression. At this stage, preventive measures are no longer beneficial; instead, therapeutic support is necessary.
Burnout develops gradually, often starting with a phase of intense effort and making one's work part of their identity.
